Toxic stress and the developing child

Stress isn't the enemy. Some stress builds resilience. What harms a child is stress that is severe, prolonged, and — most importantly — faced alone.

Positive, tolerable, toxic

A vaccine is positive stress. A grandparent's death, buffered by loving adults, is tolerable. Chronic adversity with no consistent adult to help metabolize it is toxic — and it changes brain and body chemistry.

The buffering adult

One safe, consistent adult can shift a child's biology from toxic back to tolerable. This is not sentimental. It is documented in cortisol, heart rate, and gene expression.

Takeaways

  • ·It's not the event — it's whether the child is alone in it.
  • ·One steady adult can change the trajectory.

Reflection

  • "Who was your steady adult? Whose steady adult could you be?"
