How relationships build a brain
A baby's brain forms over one million new neural connections every second during the earliest years. The wiring diagram is drawn by experience — mostly, by the experience of being cared for.
Bottom up, inside out
The brain builds from the brainstem upward. Regulation must come before reasoning. A child who has not felt safe cannot yet be reasoned with — they can only be steadied.
Use it or lose it
Connections used often become stronger. Those left dormant are pruned. This is why early language exposure, safe touch, and predictable routines matter so profoundly.
Sensitive periods
There are windows when certain circuits — vision, language, attachment — build most readily. Missing these windows doesn't close the door, but it makes the work harder later.
